Quinquina-based aperitifs, a little forgotten nowadays, were very popular during the first half of the 20th century. Cinchona is bark from a tree in South America. This plant has tonic properties, appetizers and febrifuges. It is, from the beginning of the 19th century, used in maceration in wine and alcohol to constitute a drink which is taken before the meals. In 1846, Joseph Dubonnet created one of the first appetizers made from cinchona, intended primarily for colonial troops. Brands are multiplying during the century. Cinchona wine is very easy to produce, because it comes from a maceration of bark in wine with alcohol. Each manufacturer adds aromatic concentrates, such as orange peel, coffee and fragrances to stand out from the competition.

The Larousse medical dictionary of 1912 gives a cinchona wine recipe: 30g cinchona bark is steeped in one liter of alcohol at 60 ° for 24 hours, one liter of red wine is added and ten days are filter and consume the drink. It is recommended to take one or two drinks a day, half an hour before the meal.

The confusion between pleasure drink and medication is carefully maintained by the advertising that producers make. Cinchona wine is presented as a tonic and can be consumed at all ages. Manufacturers add meat extracts to their product (see the previous post) to reinforce their toning qualities. Children, who at the time may suffer from anemia or have health problems, are therefore among the target consumers. We see it in this advertisement for wine Aroud, made in the laboratory.
